The walls of Hotel Plaza Herrera were raised in the 19th century — not as a hotel, but as the Boyd family residence. The house was entrusted to Villanueva, one of the leading public builders of the era, working with French artisans whose hand can also be seen in Panama’s National Archives and other standout government buildings.
It was one of the grand private residences that once lined the streets of what would become Panama’s most celebrated historic district. Several lives ago. A different city. A different century.
The Historic Suites occupy the spaces within that original structure where the building’s character was most carefully preserved and brought forward: restored wood beams, handcrafted ironwork matched to the original, traditional wooden shutters, and dramatic penny tile floors laid as part of the restoration.
Modern comforts — climate control, smart room technology, premium bedding, marble bathrooms — are present, but they do not lead.

Hotel Plaza Herrera’s restoration followed the preservation guidelines that govern Panama’s UNESCO World Heritage site. Where original materials survived structurally, they were carefully restored and retained. The beams remained. The proportions that give each room its quality of light remained. The soul of the house remained.
Modern infrastructure — plumbing, electrical, air conditioning — was introduced with care, rebuilt to contemporary standards while respecting the original layout of each room. The project also follows a green-build approach, reducing energy use by approximately 40% per square meter while preserving the atmosphere of the historic structure.
